Entire Czech Chairlift Stolen

Desna trail map (chairlift in center)

The Ski Channel is reporting today that an entire chairlift has been stolen from the tiny Czech town of Desna, near Prague. Of course, the first question is "how?" More details after the jump.

Sadly, no one seems to know how the thieves managed to pull off the heist. Sources say that the thieves took the entire chairlift, including all the chairs, 1km of steel cable, and even the lift towers. No one apparently saw the theft, which is remarkable considering it must have taken quite some time to dismantle a functional chairlift.

Apparently metal theft is a big problem in the Czech Republic. According to another report published by PlanetSki.eu:

"Metal thefts are frequent in the Czech Republic. Thieves, often homeless people, steal for example cables from construction sites, manhole covers, road signs or rails from disused railway tracks..."

Wow. Let's hope the thieves only pinch disused railroad tracks. In light of the foregoing, it almost seems downright considerate that they didn't steal the chairlift while people were riding it!

The authorities have no leads, but if found, I wonder if the Czech Republic would admit an American attorney pro hac vice to prosecute the lowlifes...
